Happy National Nutrition Month!

Healthy breakfast. Yogurt with granola and berriesNational Nutrition Month

March is officially here, which means it is time to participate in National Nutrition Month. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics started National Nutrition Month as a way to bring attention to the importance of making healthy and informed food choices. It is also the perfect time to start developing sound physical activity habits.

There are many ways in which you can celebrate National Nutrition Month, including:

  • De-stress the 6 p.m. scramble – thinking ahead can help to eliminate the nightly questions of “what’s for dinner.” Create a list of favorite family dinners next to the refrigerator as a guideline of what to make if you get stuck. Consider freezing stews, soups, or pasta sauce to ensure that a delicious, healthy meal is never more than a few minutes away.
  • Do not deprive yourself – try to follow the 90/10 approach when it comes to deciding what to eat. Ninety percent of the time make healthy food choices, but leave 10 percent of your diet for sweets or other favorite foods. Looking forward to a small, sweet treat at the end of the day will help to cut down the amount of unhealthy choices you make during the day.
  • Earn your calories – the more you move throughout the day, the more you can eat while still maintaining a healthy weight. Try to fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, even if is something as small as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Have snacks ready – create your own “snack packs” full of fruits, veggies, nuts, and other healthy options as an easy and fast way to grab something to eat when you are heading out the door.

All of us at Massive Insurance in Pasadena, California would like to encourage you to make healthy eating choices this month.
