Back to School Tips For Little Tykes & Parents

Ensuring A Smooth Transition Back To School

Going back to school, especially at a brand new school, can be an overwhelming experience for children. The best way to describe it is bittersweet – They are excited to see their old friends but nervous about all of the uncertainties associated with a new school year, new lessons, new teacher, and new friends. We want you and your little tyke to have a successful transition once the new school year arrives, which is why we have gathered some back to school tips to assist:

  • Many children find the most daunting part of going back to school to be meeting their new teacher. They finally connected with their last teacher and now they must find a connection with a new adult. Make sure to take advantage of back to school night and open houses so your little one can get to know their teacher. If they are extremely nervous, you may be able to calm their nerves by showing them a picture of their new teacher from the yearbook so that they can put a face to the name.
  • If your little one will be venturing a new campus this year, take a tour with them before school begins. Exploring the school while holding your hand will reduce their worries and help them see the excitement in learning.
  • Having brand new school supplies is a great way to get your child excited for the new semester ahead. Take a trip to the store with them and let them choose what will make their experience most comfortable, within reason of course.
  • If your child will be riding the school bus each day, you will want to give them the opportunity to meet their bus driver and get acquainted. This is especially important if this will be their first year on the bus.
